Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Kedah D.A., Malaysia – 8th June 2006 – Four years ago, ETI Tech started operations from a small office cum workshop in Gurney Plaza, Penang, with about 1,000 square feet. Today, the company officially moved its entire operations to a newly built 40,000 square feet research and development (R&D) centre in Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Kedah Darul Aman, an MSC Cybercity.

The new R&D centre shall house the company’s design, development and prototyping, as well as sales and marketing activities. The building comes with a 20,000 square feet floor space to be equipped with research, development and prototyping laboratory and offices to house the R&D team is designed with the idea of using the latest technologies in networking infrastructure and communication capabilities. It shall be the nucleus of the company’s activities to connect its design, development and manufacturing activities with its global sales and marketing operations.
ETI Tech started planning and designing the centre in 2003 upon realizing the growing potential of the market for intelligent battery management systems in Malaysia as well as Asia in general. The company moved into a rented technical lab in Kulim Hi-Tech Park’s Techno Centre by early 2004. Construction on the centre started in April 2005. By May 2006, the new R&D was completed.

The new R&D centre is expected to address some of ETI Tech’s growth requirements. “In the past, we had to depend on our outsourced partners to support our prototyping needs. Now, we can do most of the things ourselves” said, K.K. Lee, Managing Director of ETI Tech.

Within the vicinity to ETI’s R&D centre, the technology park currently hosts companies such as Infineon Technologies AG, Silterra Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Intel Products Sdn Bhd and contract manufacturer Celestica Sdn Bhd, among various other electronics manufacturers within the vicinity to ETI’s R&D centre.

The Kulim Hi-Tech Park was born out of the foresight of the Malaysian Government’s decision in the late 1980’s to boost its manufacturing sector by dove-tailing on certain high-technology industries, to promote high value added industrialisation teamed with research and development. Kulim was selected as the location for a high-technology park and the Kulim Hi-Tech Park was officially launched in 1996.

Located at the centre of the Northern Region in Kedah Darul Aman, the Park is very close to the North-South and East-West Highways. It is 27 km from the North Butterworth Container Terminal and 45 km from Bayan Lepas International Airport. It is directly linked to the East-West Highway via a four lane primary access road.

Key factors that influenced ETI Tech’s decision to set up its R&D centre in the park is due to its ability to attract principal and other supporting companies in the electronics industry, as well as high caliber human resources, comprising highly-educated and technically-competent professionals.

Kulim Technology Park Corporation Berhad (KTPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kedah’s development arm (Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Kedah), serves as the developer and manager of Kulim Hi-Tech Park, which is envisioned to be a self-contained township that would have all the infrastructure and support facilities to cater to the needs of industry, academia, research and its residents.

“KTPC’s vision,” said its group chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Shukri Tajuddin, “is to be the leading technology-based corporation in providing infrastructure, facilities and services for high-technology industries. This, in turn, creates an environment for high-technology manufacturing and its supporting activities, R&D, knowledge advancements, career-building
along with life and leisure,” he added.

ETI Tech is proud to be a component of the growing communities within the Kulim Hi-Tech Park.
